MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED and possess or qualifies for a NM Substitute Teacher’s license.

POSITION SUMMARY:
To enable each child to pursue his/her education as efficiently and completely as possible in the absence of the regular teacher.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Report to the building principal, or his/her designee, upon arrival at the school building.
- Review with the building principal, department head or secretary all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.
- Maintain as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and the assigned classroom.
- Teach the lesson outlined as prepared by the absent teacher. (All substitutes should have lesson plans and teacher instructions on how to proceed with lessons for the day. If not available, see the building principal or secretary. The substitute should consult as appropriate, with the building principal before initiating any teaching or other procedures not specified in the absent teacher’s lesson plan.)
- Supervise students at all times unless otherwise instructed.
- Take on all the responsibilities assigned to the regular teacher. This will include the following: morning duty; lunch duty; bus duty both before and after school; recess supervision; and monitoring class changes. Roll call must be taken for each class change.
- Escort students to the lunch room at the designated time. Escort students our for recess and monitor return from recess. Escort students to the buses after classes are dismissed.
- Long-term substitutes should attend staff meetings called by the building principal or designee.
- Ensure that Title I students go to Title I Reading at the designated time.
- Ensure that students go to the Library at the designated time.
- Ensure that students receiving Special Services, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc. go to their designated serviced areas as scheduled.
- Ensure that students scheduled for other services are followed.
- Promptly report to work and duty station.
- Do not physically handle students in discipline situations. Students exhibiting discipline problems will be referred to the building principal. Refrain from verbal engagement with these students.
- Follow all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practices dictates.
- Attend substitute teacher training for calendar year prior to employment.
- Follow Chain of Command, in priority, as follows: Building Principal, Counselor, and Teacher.
- Rely on classroom education assistant, if available, for assistance in instructions and following schedules.
PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS:
Employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 lbs.; and occasionally will lift up to 25 lbs.
PRIMARY JOB LOCATION:
Elementary, Middle or High School as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
On call as needed. Salary and work calendar are established annually by the Board of Education.
